VALUE BASED RANKING

Those that are familiar with Value Based Drafting (VBD) will realize the basic essence of what this method reveals -

In it's simplest form: The value of a player is determined not by the number of points he scores, but by how much he outscores his peers at his particular position. - Joe Bryant, FootballGuys.com

Your team and your opponent start the same number of players, with generally the same amount at each position. Your objective is to outscore your opponent

In the matchup above, most just see the final score with the Legion winning. The point differences at each position, when totaled, determined the winner. His QB outscored the opponents QB by 3 pts, outscored his RBs by 15, etc. The game was won on individual matchups. Its easy to figure, you want a QB better than your opponent, but you also want one that will outdistance your opponents QB as much as possible. If your QB can create a wider gap in points it would make it easier for you to make up deficiencies at other positions.

So how do you select a QB that will out distance other QBs? This is where value ranking comes in. Lets for example, take this year's stats and fantasy points for this example league. Priest Holmes has 146 pts (up to week 8) and the next RB has only 100 pts (McAlister). Breaking it down to points per week average Holmes has 18.25 and the McAlister is 12.5, meaning on the average, Holmes will outscore McAlister by 6 points every week.

If we want to just only compare QBs to QBs, using point averages would be the way to go. But we want to get a player's actual value, not only in comparison to other QBs, but to other positions as well. We have to establish a baseline at each position that will level the comparisons.

With this in mind, we look to your league rules for the answer. As in most, your league rules stipulate that there should be (for example) only 1 QB per team that starts, 2 RBs, 2 WRs, etc. So basically, if the league has 12 teams, there are only 12 starting QBs, 24 starting RBs, 24 starting WRs, etc. We can incorporate this as part of the formula to determine a baseline of comparison.

Looking over the YTD stats (in order of points), we find the 24th highest scoring RB. His (Kevan Barlow) point total is 42. (If we were reviewing QBs, we would find the 12th highest scoring QB.) Dividing 42 by 8 (weeks) his average is 5.3. This is our baseline for RBs. Now, lets start comparing all RBs to this baseline. Using Priest Holmes, his VALUE would be 13 (18.3 - 5.3 = 13). Meaning, basically, that Holmes would outscore an average RB by 13 points each week (a very high value). Lamar Smith, the 10th highest RB, would have a value of 2.6 (7.9 - 5.3 = 2.6).

By obtaining the most value over all positions, you improve your chances of outscoring your opponents. Also, by establishing a value, you can compare different position players.

In this league Donovan McNabb has a 5 value and Tony Gonzalez has a value of 6.6. Even though McNabb (119) has twice as many points, Gonzalez (53) is proving he is the more valuable player because he is outscoring the other TE by more, thus giving your team more of a chance to win. Other teams have QBs that score a lot of points too, thus making McNabbs points not so impactful.

With this formula, FanStar has crunched all the numbers and valued your players based on the league criteria and added up the different values for each position. This report tells you where your team stands in comparison to other teams in the leagues.
